Are we living in a democracy?

I could not log on to lekhini.org site and hence I could not transliterate this post from english script into telugu.I tried for four hours but could not open lekhini.Because of my urge to post this,I am writing this in English.

I recall reading that Abraham Lincoln had defined democracy as a government of the people,by the people, for the people. But when I saw the horrendous attack by the police on the people of Sompet, I doubt whether we are living in a democracy in spite of our claims that ours is the world's largest democracy.

When somany people do not want the power plant in their fertile lands a government that is run by the people for the people should abandon it.Isn't it?

The adamant attitude of Dharmana Prasada Rao that nothing can stop the power plant is a slap on the people and our belief that we are living in a democracy.I have never seen Sompet, but the visuals on television screen portray a fertile land with lush greenery. Isn't it a shame to sacrifice those lands at the altar of socalled development?

Why can't people's wishes can be accommodated while going ahead with agenda of development?Should development always mean tears for the common man? It is time for all of us to introspect.
